Reduced numbers of photoreceptor neurons. Presence of Dana\Om(1K)SuT2 causes a nearly normal eye phenotype.
Ommatidia are present in two separate masses on the dorsal and ventral rims of the eye. Pigmented tissue forms a crescent in these areas. Rough cuticularised tissues with scattered bristles and hairs are seen medially to these areas. Necrosis of the eye discs starts during third larval instar.
Eyes are lozenge shaped or broadly concave at the anterior margin. A roughly grained area extends across the middle half of the eye, it contains no distinct ommatidia or interommatidial bristles and very little pigment, bristles that are present are enlarged.
