RpS31 heterozygous adults exhibit a Minute phenotype (shorter and thinner bristles than wild-type flies), as well as a progressive decrease in climbing ability. Their midguts exhibit increased DNA damage (accumulation of 8-oxoG and γH2AvD).

There is an increase in the level of apoptosis in the wing discs of RpS31/+ larvae.

Mutant cells do not exhibit any mitotic defects.

Heterozygotes have shorter bristles than wild type flies. Eclosion is delayed by 36 hours.

Heterozygotes have a Minute bristle phenotype and the eyes occasionally show a slight roughness. Larval development of heterozygotes is delayed by about 3.3 days at 25oC compared to control siblings. Larval development of heterozygotes is delayed by about 2.8 days at 21 +/- 2oC compared to control siblings.

strong Minute Strongly reduced bristles. Good viability and fertility. Delays puparium formation about 42 hr at 25oC; first and second instars also delayed (Brehme, 1941). Homozygote dies in first instar. RpS31 enhances L, B (Dunn and Coyne, 1935), Bx3, NCo, Nfa-1, ap4, Jag, Ser, sens, and apXa (Bryson, 1940). Treanor (1962) suggests that the mitochondrial membrane is defective and labile phosphate formation is disturbed. Recovery of RpS31 from RpS31/In(3R)C, l(3)a mothers is reduced (Schultz). RK2.

    Additional Comments
    Genetic Interactions
    Statement
    Reference

Although apoptosis is similar to wild-type controls in pixL17/+ wing discs, levels are enhanced in pixL17/+, RpS31/+ double mutants.

Dl3 is viable in double heterozygous combination with RpS31. The lethality of Dl1 RpS31 heterozygotes is partially suppressed by H1.
