Eyes of homozygous flies have a slight roughening.
Rough eye phenotype resulting from a failure of a proportion of R7 cells and outer photoreceptor cells to differentiate. Heterozygotes show a mild roughness near the anterior margin of the eye, and 25% of ommatidia are missing R7 cells. Homozygotes have slightly smaller eyes which are rough throughout the eye, and 75% of ommatidia are missing R7 cells and 20% are missing one or more outer photoreceptors.
Homozygous viable with a dominant rough eye phenotype due to missing photoreceptors, predominantly R7.
