abnormal developmental rate (with SmnX7), with SmnTag:FLAG
20-30% of Smnf01109/SmnX7 mutant larvae are long lived and can survive for many days without undergoing metamorphosis or exhibiting the wandering behaviour typical of the late third instar.
Smnf01109/SmnX7 mutant animals display significant defects in larval locomotion. Larvae that have been placed on their dorsal surface take longer to return to their ventral surface (the crawling position ) than controls. Smnf01109/SmnX7 mutant larvae are also unable to burrow into their food although if cuts are made in the media, the larvae are able to work their way into the crevices.
Homozygous larvae are thinner and shorter than control larvae at 4 days after egg laying.
Homozygous second-third instar larvae show impaired motor function, showing a smaller distance travelled in the 20 seconds after movement was stimulated with a needle than control larvae.
67% of homozygotes eclose as adults.
Homozygous third instar larvae show a moderate reduction in bouton number per muscle area at the neuromuscular junction compared to wild type.
Smn73Ao/Smnf01109 third instar larvae show a reduction in bouton number per muscle area at the neuromuscular junction compared to wild type.
Smnf05960/Smnf01109 third instar larvae do not show a change in bouton number per muscle area at the neuromuscular junction compared to wild type.

Scer\GAL4elav.PLu, Smnf01109, witUAS.cMa has abnormal neuroanatomy | third instar larval stage phenotype

Cbp20[+]/Cbp20e02787, Smnf01109 has NMJ bouton | third instar larval stage phenotype
FMRFa[+]/FMRFaKG01300, Smnf01109 has NMJ bouton | third instar larval stage phenotype
Scer\GAL4elav.PLu, Smnf01109, witUAS.cMa has NMJ bouton phenotype
Mad12/Mad[+], Smnf01109 has NMJ bouton phenotype
Cbp20e02787/Smnf01109 or FMRFaKG01300/+;Smnf01109/+ third instar larvae show significant decreases in the number of boutons per muscle area at the neuromuscular junction, compared to heterozygotes (heterozygotes are similar to wild type).
Expression of witScer\UAS.cMa under the control of Scer\GAL4elav.PLu in a Smnf01109/+ background results in a reduction in bouton number per muscle area at the third larval instar neuromuscular junction compared to wild type.
Smnf01109/Mad12 double heterozygotes show a reduction in bouton number per muscle area at the third larval instar neuromuscular junction compared to wild type.
The reduction in bouton number per muscle area at the neuromuscular junction that is seen in Smn73Ao/Smnf01109 third instar larvae is suppressed by Dad271-68/Dad271-68.

Smn73Ao/Smnf01109 is partially rescued by Scer\GAL4how-24B/SmnUAS.Tag:FLAG/Scer\GAL4how-24B
SmnX7/Smnf01109 is not rescued by SmnAct5C.Tag:FLAG
Expression of SmnT:Zzzz\FLAG in a Smnf01109/SmnX7 mutant background results in >70% rescue of lethality. The resulting adults are fertile with no apparent defects in flight or motility. Pupation and eclosion occurs a day later than in wild type controls. Expression of SmnT:Zzzz\FLAG also rescues the motility and burrowing defects seen in Smnf01109/SmnX7 mutant larvae.
Expression of SmnAct5C.T:Zzzz\FLAG fails to rescue the larval lethality seen in Smnf01109/SmnX7 mutants.
Expression of SmnT205I.T:Zzzz\FLAG fully rescues the larval lethality seen in Smnf01109/SmnX7 mutants. However lethality in these mutants occurs at the pupal stage, with only 25% of mutants eclosing as adults. Pupation and eclosion occurs a day later than in wild type controls. Expression of SmnT:Zzzz\FLAG also largely rescues the motility defects seen in Smnf01109/SmnX7 mutant larvae, whereas the burrowing defects are fully rescued.
