Expression of E2f1dsRNA.Scer\UAS.cJa results in: small rough eyes (with the Scer\GAL4GMR.PF driver), no wings at 25[o]C or slightly curly wings at 18[o]C (with Scer\GAL4nub.PK), pupal lethality at 18[o]C or morphological defects in the posterior wing compartment with occasional blisters at 18[o]C (with Scer\GAL4en.PU). Expression controlled by Scer\GAL4Act5C.PI is lethal; no overt adult phenotype is observed when driven by Scer\GAL4ey.PH.

Expression of E2f1dsRNA.Scer\UAS.cJa in the wing disc under the control of Scer\GAL4ptc-559.1 results in a reduction in size of the corresponding region in adult wings. Little apoptosis is seen in the third instar larval wing discs at 25[o]C. If the larvae are shifted to 29[o]C at either 72 or 96 hours after egg deposition, robust caspase activity is seen after 24 hours, particularly in the pouch.

When larvae expressing E2f1dsRNA.Scer\UAS.cJa under the control of Scer\GAL4ptc-559.1 are irradiated, less cell death is seen in the wing disc in comparison with irradiated controls. The cells in the A compartment are the first to benefit, but the protective effect is able to reach the P compartment. The same result is seen when expression of E2f1dsRNA.Scer\UAS.cJa is repressed until 96 hours after egg deposition using Scer\GAL80αTub84B.PL and de-repressed for 24 hours prior to irradiation. There is no change in the mitotic index in the A and P compartments in discs expressing E2f1dsRNA.Scer\UAS.cJa under the control of Scer\GAL4ptc-559.1.

Expression of one copy of E2fdsRNA.Scer\UAS.cJa under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PU results in a slight rough eye phenotype characterised by fused ommatidia. The phenotype is more severe if the flies carry multiple copies of E2fdsRNA.Scer\UAS.cJa or if they also carry E2fi1/+.

Expression of E2fdsRNA.Scer\UAS.cJa under the control of Scer\GAL4ptc-559.1 results in a reduction in the L3-L4 intervein region in the wing.

Expression of E2fdsRNA.Scer\UAS.cJa under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PU results in a rough eye phenotype.
