FLPase-mediated recombination between the two progenitor insertions (PBac{WH}dsxf00683 and P{XP}d06446) results in deletion of dsx.
dsxΔ adult flies display an intersex phenotype along with courtship defects and are completely sterile.
dsxΔ has abnormal courtship behavior phenotype, suppressible by Dper\dsx+t31M5

dsxΔ, fruP1.LexA, dsx1, Df(3R)Exel6179 is a non-suppressor of increased occurrence of cell division | female limited | adult stage phenotype of NKK102890, Scer\GAL4NP7397
Dper\dsx+t31M5, Dper\fru+t36N18, dsxΔ/dsx1, fruP1.LexA/fruAJ96u3 has abnormal song phenotype
dsxΔ, fruP1.LexA, dsx1, Df(3R)Exel6179 is a non-suppressor of adult posterior midgut epithelium | female limited phenotype of NKK102890, Scer\GAL4NP7397
dsxΔ/+, Df(3R)Exel6179/+ individuals, dsxΔ/dsx1, Df(3R)Exel6179/+ individuals, dsxΔ/Df(3R)dsx11, Df(3R)Exel6179/+ individuals, dsxΔ/dsxD, Df(3R)Exel6179/+ individuals, dsxΔ/dsx1, Df(3R)Exel6179/fruΔtra individuals and dsxΔ/dsx1, fruP1.LexA/Df(3R)Exel6179 individuals do not show significant changes in mitotic index in the female and male adult posterior midgut, as compared to controls.
fruP1.LexA/Df(3R)Exel6179, dsx1/dsxΔ double transheterozygosity does not suppress the increased mitotic index in the female adult posterior midgut induced by the adulthood-only expression of NKK102890 under the control of Scer\GAL4esg-NP7397 (and Gal80[ts], for the temporal regulation of expression).
The intersex phenotype of dsxΔ/dsxΔ flies can be rescued by combination with either Dyak\dsx+t27I2 or Dana\dsx+t21E22 or Dper\dsx+t31M5 (the morphology of external genitalia and penis of the xenotransgenic rescue males is comparable to males rescued with a wild-type D. melanogaster dsx transgene, only minor defects in sex comb formation are observed) - apart from Dana\dsx+t21E22 this also rescues the dsxΔ mutant sterility.
Similarly, the xenotransgenes also rescue the courtship behavior of dsxΔ mutants without imparting any of the unique species-specific courtship behavior but also without transferring the quantitative differences in aspects of the courtship behavior that are shared across the species (e.g. the time spent with wings extended or the angle of the wing relative to the body axis). The xenotransgenic rescue males also do not show species-specific song interconversion but sing like Drosophila melanogaster with alternating bouts of pulse and sine song.
dsx1 fruP1.LexA/dsxΔ fruAJ96u3 double mutants rescued with Dana\dsx+t21E22 and Dana\fru+t20H8 also sing like melanogaster with both pulse and sine song elements present, whereas mutants rescued with Dper\dsx+t31M5 and Dper\fru+t36N18 only sing normal-pulse song but not the sine song (but still do not display any evidence of species-specific song interconversion).
dsxΔ is rescued by dsx+t36E18
The intersex phenotype, courtship defects and complete sterility of dsxΔ homozygous adults is rescued by combination with dsx+t36E18.
