Cytochrome P450-18a1 (Cyp18a1) encodes a P450 enzyme that inactivates the hormone 20 hydroxy ecdysone through addition of an OH group to the 26 carbon of the hormone molecule. It is expressed in many larval tissues. Cyp18a1 mutants result in prepupal lethality due to improper activation kinetics of the transcription factor encoded by ftz-f1. CYTOCHROME P450 - CYP2 CLAN -
Cytochrome P450, or CYP genes, constitute one of the largest families of genes, with representatives in virtually all living organisms. P450 enzymes are heme-thiolate proteins best known for their monooxygenase role, catalyzing the transfer of one atom of molecular oxygen to a substrate and reducing the other to water. The CYP2 clan includes D. melanogaster CYP18 and CYP303-307 family genes. CYP2 members have diverse roles and are widely considered as "environmental response genes" in mammalian species.
