NMDA IONOTROPIC GLUTAMATE RECEPTORS -
NMDA receptors are a sub-type of ionotropic glutamate receptor which are selectively activated by the agonist N-Methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA). The heterotetrameric complex binds glutamate, allowing the passage of Ca2+ ions through the channel. They are best characterized for their roles in excitatory synaptic transmission in the CNS. Nmdar1 protein is expressed throughout the adult brain but more strongly in some cells. Staining is punctate which suggests synaptic localisation. Cells more strongly stained include four pairs of dorsal posterior medial DPM4 neurons (where it co-localises with Nmdar1 protein) and one pair of dorsal anterior lateral DAL2 neurons.
