    Spc25 (Spc25) encodes a component of the Ndc80 complex, which is an essential kinetochore constituent. [Date last reviewed: 2019-03-14]
    Protein Function (UniProtKB)
    Acts as a component of the essential kinetochore-associated Ndc80 complex, which is required for chromosome segregation and spindle checkpoint activity during meiosis and mitosis (PubMed:17895365, PubMed:17333235). Required for kinetochore integrity and the organization of stable microtubule binding sites in the outer plate of the kinetochore (PubMed:17895365, PubMed:17333235). Participates in SAC signaling that responds specifically to disruptions in spindle microtubule dynamics (PubMed:17333235). The NDC80 complex synergistically enhances the affinity of the SKA1 complex for microtubules and may allow the NDC80 complex to track depolymerizing microtubules (By similarity).

    Homozygous lethal. l(3)87Da2 and l(3)87Da3 both partially complement l(3)87Da1 (15% and 30% survival respectively) and each other (75% survival). Surviving heterozygotes with l(3)87Da1 exhibit variation in dorsal central bristle number and length, and females greatly outnumber males; sex ratio and bristle morphology normal in l(3)87Da2/ l(3)87Da3 survivors.

      RNAi screen using dsRNA made from templates generated with primers directed against this gene results in chromosome misalignment on the metaphase spindle and a spindle that is aberrantly long when assayed in S2 cells. This phenotype can be observed when the screen is performed with or without Cdc27 dsRNA.
