Definition An upper respiratory tract disease which is characterized by inflammation of the tonsils resulting from bacterial (Group A streptococcus) and viral (Epstein-Barr virus, adenovirus) infections. Symptoms include a severe sore throat, painful or difficult swallowing, coughing, headache, myalgia, fever and chills.
