| Definition |
Coiled epithelial tube connected to the anterior ventral part of the uterus (Heifetz and Rivlin, 2010; McQueen et al., 2022). The tube is approximately 2 millimeters long, with a funnel-shaped entrance, a narrow proximal region and a wide distal region (Heifetz and Rivlin, 2010). The proximal region is lined by an epithelium with dense microvilli covered by a thick extracellular matrix (Heifetz and Rivlin, 2010). The epithelium of the distal region has its microvilli arranged in a highly ordered brush border covered by a thin extracellular matrix (Heifetz and Rivlin, 2010). External to the epithelium is a basal lamina surrounded by a circular muscle layer (Heifetz and Rivlin, 2010). After mating, sperm are stored in this organ and remain active and motile (Heifetz and Rivlin, 2010).[ FlyBase:FBrf0210152 FlyBase:FBrf0253444 ] |
