Term descending neuron of the gnathal ganglion DNg28 ID (Ontology) FBbt:00047620 (Fly Anatomy)
Definition Serotonergic descending neuron belonging to the DNg group, having a large cell body in the SE1 cluster, in the lateral part of the cell body rind around the gnathal ganglion (Alekseyenko et al., 2010; Namiki et al., 2018; Yao and Scott, 2022). It has dendrites in the flange, prow and gnathal ganglion (Namiki et al., 2018; Yao and Scott, 2022) and it responds to bitter taste stimuli from the proboscis and legs (Yao and Scott, 2022). This neuron does not cross the midline and it sends an axonal projection via the ipsilateral side of the cervical connective to the ventral nerve cord (Namiki et al., 2018; Yao and Scott, 2022). It also sends projections into the labial nerve and to the hypocerebral ganglion, via the recurrent nerve (Yao and Scott, 2022). It activates enteric neurons that express serotonin receptors and can stimulate crop contraction (Yao and Scott, 2022).
