FlyBase’s servers have been experiencing an unprecedented amount of traffic recently, which has been causing the site to crash. We have been working on how to implement a system for banning IPs in a way that allows the site to stay online as much as possible, while affecting the fewest number of legitimate users. Without these IP-blocking measures, FlyBase would be down most of the time.

While using a Python etc. script to grab a bunch of FlyBase pages will (slowly) get the job done, there are faster ways to find what you need that do not stress FlyBase’s servers. This kind of script is a main cause of FlyBase service degradation and outages!
