Imprecise excision of the P{EP} element.
Homozygous embryos have a characteristic U-shape, with part of the ventral cuticle at the posterior end curved upwards. Embryos derived from homozygous germline clones (lacking maternal ppo function) show the same mutant phenotype as homozygous embryos (which lack zygotic ppo function), suggesting there is no significant maternal contribution for ppo. Homozygous clones in the adult thorax lack bristles and result in a deformed scutellum. Clones in the wing margin result in loss of bristles and bristle duplications.
