Replacement of 40 base pairs at the beginning of the coding sequence for OtopLa isoforms 'c'-'g' with the Ecol\lexA and miniwhite genes. The deletion removes the first 14 amino acids and also changed the reading frame.

OtopLalexA1 adults exhibit decreased repulsion to low pH (HCl, tartaric acid, glycolic acid, citric acid, acetic acid and propionic acid), assessed in proboscis extension response assays; the mild attraction to 0.01mM HCl in binary and proboscis extension response assays is eliminated. Small labellar gustatory sensilla (S-b) S3, S5, S9 and intermediate labellar gustatory sensilla (I-b) I8 show decreased HCL- and tartaric acid-induced action potentials; large labellar gustatory sensilla 7 show decreased HCL-induced action potentials.
