Expression of hthhs.PP in a wild-type background using a 2 hour heat shock during embryogenesis causes significant lethality, with the effect being strongest 0-4 and 4-8 hours after egg laying. The few flies that survive to adulthood are morphologically normal. Ectopic expression of hthhs.PP during the third larval instar and early pupal stages results in severe shortening of the legs, due to a lack or shortening of the tibia and tarsal segments.
