Statement Reference Homozygotes show pupal lethality when raised on standard food. However, if the food is supplemented with 30mM Mg[2+], homozygotes show almost complete larval lethality (this high level of Mg[2+] has no effect on the survival of control animals).
Homozygous larvae raised on food containing 30mM Mg[2+] are smaller and thinner than wild type. These larvae show a dramatic decrease in protein content (mutant larvae raised on standard food show only a relatively modest, although significant, reduction in protein content compared to controls).
Homozygous larvae exposed to food containing 30mM Mg[2+] for one day show a marked reduction in locomotor activity along with a reduction in foraging activity.
The anterior pair of Malpighian tubules of homozygous third instar larvae are 30% shorter than wild type and contain fewer cells. The difference compared to wild type is restricted to the main segment and the lower segment, while the transitional segment, initial segment and posterior Malpighian tubules are similar in length to wild type. Mutant third instar larvae show the same preference for 17.5[o]C over 14[o]C in a two-way choice test as do wild-type controls. | |||
