UAS regulates expression of 10 repetitive mir-1 complementary sequences (5'-GGTACGTTTAGCGTAAGTTAT-3' ) separated by four nucleotide linkers 5'-CGCG-3', creating a "Sponge" designed to sequester miRNAs and thus knocking-down endogenous miRNA activity.

Individuals expressing mir-1^sponge.UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4^NP0001, induced one day prior to infection with Pseudomonas entomophila, show a significantly smaller increase in midgut mitosis at days 0 and 3.

Scer\GAL4^Mef2.PU-mediated expression results in a progressive, age-dependent loss of flight resulting in a penetrant flightless phenotype at 30 days post eclosion. Indirect flight muscle myofibril structure shows marked defects in integrity and sarcomere organization.
