Subject: Helping FlyBase: ADRC-60520 and 60260 Dear Nathalie, We are currently curating the abstracts for the upcoming 48th (Philadelphia) Annual Drosophila Research Conference, for FlyBase. I am writing in connection with your abstracts: Undertaker, a new Drosophila mutant with defects in phagocytosis of apoptotic cells. and SCF ubiquitin ligase complex mediates phagocytosis through the novel F-box domain protein, Pallbearer. You mention two gene symbol that is new to FlyBase, undertaker and pallbearer. Do you know which of the CG annotations your genes correspond to? All the CGs have corresponding gene records in FlyBase already and we don't like to make duplicate records for what is actually the same gene unless we can't avoid it. The CG symbols become synonyms when an annotation is named with a more descriptive or functional name. Also, if you have settled on a short symbol for undertaker now would be a good time to let me know, as then I can enter it in the database from the outset. Best regards, Rachel. Subject: Re: Helping FlyBase: ADRC-60520 and 60260 Dear Rachel, Undertaker corresponds to CG10233, and Pallbearer to CG3428. None of this work is published yet though, but I am hoping to resubmit both papers in the coming weeks. In our pallbearer manuscript, I have abbreviated it as pall. I have no favorite for the undertaker abbreviation as yet, as und is already taken, so I would welcome your suggestion there! Perhaps uta or utk, the first one being perhaps easier to use during a presentation... Please let me know which one flybase might prefer so that I can stick to it in our manuscript in preparation. Thanks. Hope this helps, Best wishes, Nathalie Nathalie C. The gene records will be modified according to the new symbol:names when FlyBase is next updated. Both uta and utk are available but I agree that uta might be the best choice from the pronunciation point of view. So I will use uta unless you've changed your mind in the interim. My best regards, Rachel.
