I am a postdoc working on a project called 'MitoCheck' (www.mitocheck.org), which aims to identify and characterize genes and their products involved in mitosis in human cells. One of the hits from a proteomic screen to find new interactors of mitotic regulators is a protein we call MOZART1 (for Mitotic Spindle OrganiZing protein Associated with a Ring of g-Tubulin). A bioinformatician colleague has performed a cross-species sequence comparison to identify potential orthologs of this human gene, and has identified a significantly homologous sequence from the D.melanogaster genome. We refer to this potential fly gene as Mozart1 (or Mzt1).
