Mutant flies are neurologically impaired from eclosion.
The size of the mitochondria is increased while the number of mitochondria is reduced in a number of mutant larval and adult tissues (adult flight muscles, adult proventriculus, ovaries, larval fat body and larval salivary gland) compared to wild type. In the mutant adult flight muscles, the enlarged mitochondria are round in shape but contain intact internal structures.
Mutants hatch as morphologically normal adults but they display paralysis under stress conditions ("bang sensitivity"). The mitochondria are larger than normal and round in shape, but they have a normal ultrastructure.
