Homozygous flies show delayed emergence, they do not appear until the 3rd or 4th day after heterozygous siblings first eclose. Bristles are much more slender and considerably shorter than normal in homozygous males and females (although they have the same positions and directions as found in wild-type flies and no bristles are missing). The flies tend to be paler in colour than normal, have a dark trident pattern, be smaller in size than normal and have blunter wings, which in some cases show slight irregularities in venation. There is also a tendency to irregularities of the abdominal bands, especially in females. Homozygous males have normal fertility. Homozygous females have fairly good fertility when crossed to wild-type males, but it is exceedingly difficult to obtain progeny when homozygous males and females are mated to each other.
