UASp regulatory sequences drive expression of mars coding sequences corresponding to residues 431-921 of the mars protein, tagged at the N-terminal with GFP. This transgene is inserted into position 99F8 on the third chromosome, using the phiC31 integrase system.

      Overexpression of the C-terminal of mars (mars431-921.Scer\UAS.P\T.N.T:Avic\GFP) during embryogenesis impairs proper assembly of the mitotic spindle and causes nuclear fusion and results in severe lethality, with only an approximate 8.5% hatch rate.
