    The 4o dorsal cuticle fate (fine hairs) is missing in mutant embryos and the domain producing the 3o cell fate (thick hairs) is extended from 2-3 rows to 5-6 rows per parasegment. The anterior en-expressing cells adopt the 1o fate (dorsal denticles) instead of smooth cuticle and smooth cuticle is produced anteriorly to these cells.
