Homozygotes hatch as first instar larvae without significant delay, but their development becomes progressively slowed after this; crawling third instar larvae are still found after 14 days, compared with 4-5 days for larval development in wild-type. After 21 days, more than 20% of these mutant larvae are still moving. Homozygotes die as third instar larvae, no pupae form. Most homozygous third instar larvae contain melanotic masses of varying sizes.
