Reference

Heavy deposition of melanin is seen in the tergites of males and females approximately 12 hours after eclosion, this darkens intensely as the flies age. Heterozygous females are fully viable and fertile. Hemizygous males are viable and probably sterile (the sterility of the males may be due to hyperploidy resulting from unequal breakage of the attached X chromosome on which Aa1 was induced).
