Cyp6a291R flies show relatively high resistance to DDT.

Ten times more resistant to malathion than the unselected Cyp6a291C.

Selected on basis of resistance to DDT.

A factor (or factors) on the third chromosome of D.melanogaster (91R) affects the levels of Cyp6a2 and Cyp6a8 RNA expression. It is suggested that in the "91-R" strain there is a mutation in this 3rd chromosome factor (91R91R) allowing high levels of Cyp6a2 and Cyp6a8 expression. It is not clear whether or not the Cyp6a2 and Cyp6a8 genes are also mutated in this strain or whether the high level of expression is due solely to the mutation in the 91R factor.

The w/w+ eye mosaic assay has been used to study genetic heterogeneity in response to genotoxic carcinogens requiring metabolic conversion in seven different strains of Drosophila, including Cyp6a291R flies.
