Deletion of photoreceptors R1, R6, R7 and R8 and occasional photoreceptor duplications, several facets have greater than 4 outer photoreceptor cells demonstrating the mutation must also affect R2-R5 photoreceptor cells. Non-neuronal cells may also be affected by the mutation. Somatic mosaic clones in the eye exhibit each of the photoreceptor cell types in reduced numbers that are pigmented in 52-83% of the mosaic facets.

more severe than eql1 in its effects, often removing three photoreceptors from each facet instead of one or two.

Using a range of irradiation times from 48 hours to 96 hours before pupariation found no correlation between the size and the phenotype of the genetically marked clones. The size and frequency of clones in which the eql phenotype is not expressed cannot be explained by the perdurance of eql.
