Eyes are small and very rough, with the anterior border indented to give a kidney-shaped appearance. Wings are small, abnormal, outspread or upheld. Veins are thick and are often interrupted or fail to reach the wing margin. The wing margin is usually incomplete. The antennae are deformed. Macrochaetae are straggly and occasionally one is missing. Flies are short lived; 50% die less than 24 hours after eclosion. Sterile, probably because the flies are too weak to mate.
