"Leaky" lethal, most of the rare survivors are sterile. Sperm do not mature beyond a stage in postelongation in hemizygous males. Many degenerated cysts can be seen. Many cysts contain more than 64 developing gametes. The axoneme and axonemal sheath appear normal through stage 7, but more than one axoneme is often associated with a mitochondrial derivative. Mitochondria form attachments to cytoplasmic membranes as well as the axonemal sheath and paracrystalline formation is initiated at the multiple attachment sites within a single derivative. Mitochondrial derivatives are not in synchronous development within a cyst, and both major and minor derivatives accumulate dense material.
