adult abdomen & adult cuticle
Hemizygotes generally form morphologically normal pharate adults that fail to eclose and appear grey due to a failure to develop the brown coloration typical of sclerotinised cuticle. 4% of hemizygotes, 3% of l(2)37Cd1/l(2)37Cd5 and 22% of l(2)37Cd5/l(2)37Cd8 animals eclose, giving rise to adults which are smaller than normal, have a lighter body colour than normal, have thin bristles, a flattened dorsal side of the abdomen and incompletely sclerotinised wings which have delicate wavy edges. Females appear to have a foreshortened abdomen. l(2)37Cd5/l(2)37Cd8 and l(2)37Cd5/l(2)37Cd1 females are sterile.
