Hemizygotes generally form morphologically normal pharate adults that fail to eclose and appear grey due to a failure to develop the brown coloration typical of sclerotinised cuticle. 20% of hemizygotes eclose, giving rise to adults which are smaller than normal, have a lighter body colour than normal, have thin bristles, a flattened dorsal side of the abdomen and incompletely sclerotinised wings which have delicate wavy edges. Females appear to have a foreshortened abdomen. Some l(2)37Cd^ts1/l(2)37Cd⁸ and l(2)37Cd^ts1/l(2)37Cd⁹ females are fertile.
