Flies are smaller than normal; the reduction in size is most noticeable in the head and thorax. Wings are shorter than normal and slightly altered in shape. The anterior thorax is frequently dented in the mid-dorsal line. Microchaetae are deranged and macrochaetae are long and straggly. Male viability is approximately 25% of wild-type. Body colour: the abdomen is almost always abnormally pigmented, ranging from no melanisation of tergites 5 to 7 to small irregular patches of underpigmentation on tergites 5 to 7.
