The effects of 100r on the induction of sex-linked lethals is significant in mu11 but not + females.
Homozygous and hemizygous females exhibit increased rates of sex-linked visible and lethal mutations (e.g., y2 --> y+ = 1/2500; more rarely mutations to intermediate or more extreme alleles; also f3N reversions and wa --> w); heterozygous females display slightly elevated rates of mutation; about half of mutants occur as clusters indicating a premeiotic origin. Lethal mutations frequently associated with deficiencies of one to several bands. Mutation rates not elevated in males. y - sn recombination reduced 30% in mu11 homozygous and 25% in mu11/+ heterozygous females; also females but not males display elevated frequencies of nondisjunction.
The frequency of X ray induced dominant lethals and sex-linked recessive lethals in stage 7 oocytes is similar in mu11 and wild-type females. The frequency of X ray induced X chromosome loss in stage 7 oocytes is higher in mu11 females than wild-type females, although this difference is only statistically significant at higher doses of 3000 and 3750R and not at lower doses of 750-2250R. The frequency of X ray induced sex-linked recessive lethals in pre-meiotic germ cells is similar in mu11 and wild-type females.
