mud2 mutants display mitotic spindle positioning defects in third instar larval neuroblasts: in contrast to wild-type controls, a significant proportion of cells show spindles with the angle between centrosomal pole and center of the mira protein crescent higher than the 15[o], the length of the spindle is normal. The number of neuroblasts is significantly increased in the posterior half of the larval brain hemisphere in mud2 mutants and the brain is larger compared to controls.

Hemizygous males are fully fertile and produce normal numbers of motile sperm.

Phenotype is similar to mud1, but the defects are more severe.

Semi-lethal. Hemizygous larvae fed BrdU demonstrate that the abdominal vm-NB and dl-NB ignore the mitotic arrest during late embryogenesis and early postembryogenesis and prolong their proliferating period to generate enlarged clusters of progeny cells. Increased numbers of fibres in the larval peduncle as well as the enlarged MB neuropil and MB cortex derives from a surplus number of MB-NB in the dorsocaudal brain region.
