The Notch locus in the reverted chromosome N+M contains an insertion homologous to the FB4 foldback element (Grimwade, Muskavitch, Welshons, Yedvobnick and Artavanis-Tsakonas).
Lethal in hemizygous males. Females show notching of the tips and occasionally of the edges of the wing, have thickened veins which broaden to form deltas, slightly smaller eyes than normal and infrequently a gross reduction of one eye. NM/Nspl-1 flies have roughened eyes which are smaller than normal and split bristles.
