      slfIJ83/slfIJ83, slfIJ83/Df(2L)ED250 and slfIJ83/Df(2L)BSC225 mutant ready-to-hatch larvae are contracted and separated from the egg case by liquid, unlike controls; the head skeleton is unaffected and tracheae are air-filled, similar to controls; in the case of slfIJ83 homozygotes the cuticle is impermeable, similar to controls, but when larvae are freed from the egg, they contract and crumple and the outer cuticle layers detach from the body surface (leaving the procuticle attached), unlike controls; mid-stage 17 slfIJ83 mutant embryos (before air-filling of tracheae) occupy the entire egg space, similar to controls.
