Detailed Description

Homozygous embryos have undifferentiated cuticle.

sro1/sroO4-105 animals normally die as embryos, but if they are treated with 20-hydroxyecdysone midway through embryogenesis, approximately 52% hatch into first instar larvae. Approximately 45% of these rescued animals grow into second instar larvae if they are raised on a diet supplemented with 20-hydroxyecdysone.

Lethality occurs before embryonic stage 8.

7 to 16 hour homozygous embryos contain relatively normal concentrations of both ecdysone and 20-hydroxyecdysone compared to control embryos. Mutants fail to make cuticle and show defects in morphogenetic movements during late embryogenesis that lead to a failure of head involution and defective midgut formation.

Larval mouth parts and cuticle not differentiated.

At 22[o]C, Scer\GAL4en-e16E>kaydsRNA.Scer\UAS expression does not affect adult wing size in a wild-type background but the size of the posterior compartment is reduced when this transgene is expressed in a sro1/+ background.
