Flies are smaller than normal with slightly abnormally shaped wings. The abdomen shows varying degrees of abnormality, in the most extreme expression the tergites are broken and abnormally rejoined, microchaetae are deranged and pigmentation is patchy. All flies show at least a minor disturbance of pigmentation, with small dark spots on the anterior segments. Eyes are slightly reduced in size. Males are sterile and have approximately 50% wild-type viability.
