Mutant eye discs are normal. Mutant adults have an abnormal reduced corneal pseudopupil (rcp) phenotype. Adult ommatidia contain the normal number of photoreceptor cells, but the morphology of the rhabdomeres is abnormal; they are often in contact and displaced into the central portion of the ommatidium, which is normally occupied only by the R7 and R8 rhabdomeres. The R2 and R4 cells are often the most affected.
