Homozygous pieEB3 flies have rough eyes. Facet size varies from smaller than normal to enlarged (possible fused) facets. Cells of all types (pigment, cone, photoreceptor) appear to be randomly missing from ommatidial arrays. The second mitotic wave proceeds normally in pieEB3 homozygous eye discs, but unlike wild-type abundant apoptotic bodies are evident both anterior and posterior to the morphogenetic furrow. Excess cell death is also seen in wing and leg imaginal discs in these flies. On average pieEB3 homozygous adult emerge 2.5 days later than their pieEB3/+ siblings. Homozygotes comprise 23% of the adult population instead of the expected 50%. pieEB3 is semi-lethal over Df(2L)J2, Df(2L)J27, Df(2L)J39, Df(2L)J106 or Df(2L)J77. Those surviving to adulthood are very sickly, females are infertile, or nearly so, and males have reduced fertility. Somatic clones of pieEB3 cells in the adult eye have almost normal morphology. However, pieEB3 somatic clones in the eye disc have increased cell death.
Most ommatidia contain normal array of retinula cells, photoreceptor cells are sometimes directly adjacent to neighbouring units. Associated sets of photoreceptor cells occupy a single enlarged facet and are jointly surrounded by pigment cells. Homozygotes have heldout notched wings. Eye discs sometimes show irregular spacing of the ommatidia in homozygotes. Homozygous adults have a rough eye phenotype.
pieEB3 has increased cell death | recessive phenotype, suppressible by BacA\p35GMR.PH
pieEB3 is a suppressor of visible phenotype of upd1GMR.PB
hidunspecified, pieEB3/pie[+] has lethal | dominant phenotype
W[+]/hidunspecified, pieEB3 has lethal | dominant phenotype
pieEB3 has eye phenotype, suppressible by BacA\p35GMR.PH
pieEB3 is a suppressor of eye phenotype of upd1GMR.PB
In pieEB3 homozygotes the cell death increase posterior to the morphogenetic furrow in eye discs is suppressed and the rough eye phenotype of adults is mostly suppressed by BacA\p35GMR.PH. pieEB3/+ is lethal in combination with Wunspecified/+.
