Tolerance to Cadmium the same as that as for MtnA1, despite the fact that MtnA1 is expressed at three-times the level of MtnA3. The D40K substitution in MtnA3 with respect to MtnA1 is thought to reduce Cadmium binding.
Restriction analysis of the MtnA gene from a number of Drosophila species suggests that MtnA3 is the ancestral allele, from which MtnA1 is derived. MtnA1Dp appears to be derived from MtnA1. These two changes seem to have occurred in non-African populations.
