Restriction analysis of the MtnA gene from a number of Drosophila species suggests that MtnA3 is the ancestral allele, from which MtnA1 is derived. MtnA1Dp appears to be derived from MtnA1. These two changes seem to have occurred in non-African populations.

MtnA3 is presumed to be the ancestral allele, a one step transition is presumed to make MtnA1 and a further transition step forms MtnA1Dp.
