Heat induced expression of P{ovoD1-18} P{FRT(whs)} chromosome using P{hsFLP} causes a dominant female sterile phenotype, no eggs are laid by heterozygous females, oogenesis is blocked before vitellogenesis. Heat induced expression of P{ovoD1-18} P{FRT(whs)} chromosome using P{hsFLP} allows 100% recovery of germline clones (GLC) (compare to 1-2% following X ray irradiation). Eggs are laid by females derived from germline recombination events.

Heterozygotes have pale orange eyes. One copy of P{ovoD1-18} causes atrophic ovaries, the few females with normal ovaries lay abnormal eggs that have fused dorsal appendages and are flaccid. Three copies causes sterility.
