Detailed Description

In the absence of heat shock some embryos display mutant grandchildless phenotype, sterile progeny that lack germ cells. Testes of sterile males are very small and contain no sperm, ovaries of sterile females are small lacking differentiated ovarioles, oocytes and often associated with tracheols. Induction of heat shock during oogenesis produces embryos that exhibit a reduction in the number of pole cells.
