Flies show severe retinular degeneration with elimination of the ERG response. Large vacuolar structures are seen in the external plexiform layer of the lamina and the distal medulla. Gynandromorph analysis shows that the degeneration develops from the retina to the optic ganglia, and is primarily determined by the genotype of the retinula cells.
