Lethal in combination with N^Ax-E2 and viable in combination with N^Ax-9; therefore N^Ax-sAR5 belongs to the "N suppressor" class of Ax alleles. Second site dominant suppressor of N^act.sev that reduces the external roughness of the eye, in addition to causing the overall eye shape to become both rounder and larger, and less refractile.
