Cuticular defects of homozygous embryos are restricted to the derivatives of the clypeolabrum in the anterior region of the head. The median tooth is reduced in size, often misshapen and points ventrally instead of anteriorly. The epistomal sclerite is malformed and reduced. Supernumerary sclerotic fragments are frequently associated with each of these anterior head structures, and the lining of the dorsal pouch is abnormally sclerotized.
