The primary defect is disruption of the normal path and morphology of the Bolwig's nerve. In some embryos the nerve do not reach their normal place of termination. One or both Bolwig's organ may not reach its normal anterior position. Bolwig's nerve morphology is abnormal: the nerve may be abnormally thick, have swollen areas (nodules) along its length, bifurcations are also visible.
