Partial excision of the P{PZ} element, with 40bp of the P{PZ} sequences remaining. These sequences include two 16bp inverted repeats (that are vestiges of the 31bp inverted repeats of the parental P{PZ} element) and the 8bp target site duplication that accompanied the insertion of the parental P{PZ} element.

Three classes of put allele can be identified with respect to decreasing severity of wing venation phenotypes with put¹⁰ : Class I (put¹⁰⁴⁶⁰ = put⁶²) > Class II (put⁵¹ = put⁸⁸ = put¹³⁵) > Class III (put¹⁰ = put²⁴ = put⁹⁷).
